Herbert back to form August 22, 2006 Robert (London) 91 out of 105 found this review helpful
At last Herbert is back at doing what he does best - a horror story. Nobody True and to a degree Once... didn't really hit the spot, for me, but The Secret of Crickley Hall is a marvel and really shows why James Herbert is such a respected writer. There are ghosts in Crickley Hall, there are personal - real life - horrors for the family who move into the hall too.
This is James Herbert's longest and most complete work and as the story slowly unfolds to the reader, the depth and intricate emotions of the characters really come to life in a way no other Herbert novel has ever done before.
When the secrets of Crickley Hall are finally explained there is a further chill to set the imagination rocking and that is typical of Herbert's very best fiction. My only criticism however: there should be a chapter before 6: Chester, to give more suspense to the disappearance of one of the characters; but that is only a small niggle in a very entertaining and totally gripping novel. Vintage Herbert, and that is something I haven't been able to say for some time.
One of his best February 13, 2007 J. G. R. Tipp (London) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I first read a James Herbert book over 20 years ago (The Rats) and I have read every book he has written since. This book is a great page turner and you really get a build up of menace as the story progresses. The Caleighs are a family that you do care about and you find yourself compelled to continue to read on until the end. It may appear long at 600 pages but I feel that the length only increases your enjoyment as you delve into the plot.
I thoroughly recommend this to anyone.
He's still got it then!!! October 10, 2006 Matty 31 out of 37 found this review helpful
I hadn't read a James Herbert book in years, not for any particular reason, it's just that none of his recent efforts had lured me in. However I heard such great things about The Secret of Crickley Hall that I decided to revisit one of my old favourite writers. Well, Herbert is back on form and how!!! This scared the bejesus out of me. It's dead creepy, the tension mounts right from the start and it never gets boring. In literary terms Herbert is up with Stephen King as the Godfather of horror, so it's a breath of fresh air to see him showing the new kids on the block just how an old master does it. If you like your horror the good old fashioned way, and written by someone of great literary ability who knows a few of the new tricks to add to his old classics then The Secret of Crickley Hall should be right up your street. Whisper it quietly but this might just be the best horror of the year....
THE BEST BOOK EVER October 7, 2006 Bookworm 38 out of 46 found this review helpful
James Herbert has taken an age old storyline and really made it his own in this gripping read. Far from being predictable, you will find yourself enthralled in its fantastic storyline.
The book starts in the past, describing an event that had previously taken place within Crickley hall-you learn more about it as you read on further.
The narrative then changes to the present .You are introduced to the Caleigh family who are staying at Crickley hall for a bit, to get away from their London home, following the disappearance of their son Cameron a year ago. The property, having been unoccupied for many years, gives off the impression of hostility. It is greeted at first by a sense of awe and uncertainty, however, the family dog Chester takes an immediate dislike to it.
It doesn't take long for events to start happening; Bumps in the night, fleeting white shadows and a cellar door that will not stay shut- those are just the beginning for the puzzled residents. The youngest daughter Cally starts talking to children in the house which seem to show themselves via small dancing lights, but there are far more sinister presences that make themselves known.
They then hear about the great flood that killed eleven war evacuees that were under guardianship at Crickley hall, which bears a great resemblance to the strange noises that had been occurring in the house...
The book is one that did play in my mind, an accolade few authors have managed in the past. This is another amazing book to come from the genius of James Herbert, and by far the best of them all so far. Well worth reading!
AMAZING BOOK
Traditional Ghost Story December 28, 2006 Scots Lass (Scotland) 14 out of 17 found this review helpful
The action in this book takes place in the space of one week when a family move into an old house where they know a tragedy occurred - namely the drowning of 9 orphan children during a flood in the 1940's. Weird things happen from day one, with sensible dad refusing to accept anything ghostly, children sometimes spooked, sometimes fascinated by lights-around-their heads and white mists rising, and the mother - mourning the loss of her son a year before - trying to comprehend any possible link between her missing boy and the beings who appear to be trapped within the house.
Add an elderly ghost hunter, a silent geriatric woman in a nursing home, a plucky old gardener and a medium trying to resist her gift and you have all the characters necessary for a climax in a storm which mirrors the one which cost the orphans their lives....or did it????
The descriptive narrative is brilliant - the storm and incessant rain so well written that you feel you had better check all your windows are shut whilst you read! - and the family in peril are sympathetic and realistic to the extent that you want them to triumph.
A return to form for the master of horror!
